New England, Home to One of the World’s Fastest Changing Climates

About the Talk: New England faces an urgent climate reality: our region is now warming faster than nearly anywhere on the planet, except the Polar and Arctic zones. In this talk, Professor Stephen Young presents his latest peer-reviewed research on rapidly accelerating temperatures and disappearing winter snow cover across New England. Drawing on years of study, Dr. Young will discuss what these changes mean for our local ecosystems, infrastructure, and communities—and what we can expect in the years ahead. Following the presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion. Speaker Bio: Professor Young is a former chair of the Department of Geography and Sustainability at Salem State University where he uses remote sensing (satellite imaging) to analyze climate change and deforestation. He received his Ph.D. in geography from Clark University, a master's degree in environmental science from Yale University and a B.A. in environmental studies from the University of Vermont. His geographic areas of expertise include northeastern North America and China. In addition to his academic research, he bridges the arts and sciences through art gallery exhibitions which try to expose the public to science and geography.
