Blue Minded: a celebration of water themed art based on the research and book by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols
Art and science come together in a unique show inspired by the research from the best-selling book "Blue Mind" by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, the study of why we are drawn to the ocean, and how this scientifically connects to our health and happiness.
Seascapes, marshscapes and all coastal subject matter are some of the most widely collected works at Walsingham. Using the information from "Blue Mind" we now scientifically understand the deep connection we as humans have to the deep blue, and why viewing artistic interpretations of this essential resource is so wildly popular.
Brain imaging indicates that being near water floods the brain with feel-good hormones such as dopamine and oxytocin. Levels of the stress hormone cortisol actually drop. Scientists have also discovered that the brain prefers the color blue above all others and water increases our ability to focus. A finely painted oceanscape can have a similar effect.
Our show opens Friday, April 8th with a reception from 6-9 and features new ocean and water themed artwork by over 30 existing and new gallery artists. Show runs through May 31.
