'Best of Workshop': Collections of Short Plays Written by Local Playwrights

Three Collections of Short Plays by Celebrated Local Playwrights!

Like the bow of a ship cresting the final waves on its journey home, the actor bows to a wave of applause as the curtain falls. Both have journeyed through unknown depths and have been strengthened by their adventure. BOW is the acronym for our Best Of Workshop Staged Reading Series, performing at The Custom House Maritime Museum, Sundays at 5:00pm, June 12, 19, and 26, 2022. 

“We feel incredibly fortunate to bring our work to Newburyport’s finest cultural center: The Custom House. The upstairs Gallery is spacious and has the acoustics of a music chamber; the perfect venue for our incredible actors. We are presenting six staged-readings of six plays from six Playwrights on each Sunday. Tickets are $10.00 at the door and all proceeds benefit The Custom House” says Jack Rushton, Producer and co-founder of The Weekend Writer’s Workshop.

The Weekend Writers Workshop has been meeting since 2012. It’s a gathering of local playwrights and theater-makers who hear and discuss new work. “We are close colleagues and trust each other’s perspectives and opinions”, continues Jack Rushton “We are all in partnership, the goal being to make our new work as compelling as possible. At least 40 of our comedies and dramas have been produced at more than 150 Play Festivals around the country. If you love theater, you’ll love BOW”. 

“Amazing plays from our universe of local artists was just what we wanted”, says Joan Whitlow former Executive Director of The Custom House Maritime Museum. “As a museum we are home to so many facets of Newburyport’s history and through a variety of programming we expand our vision of bringing our shared human experience to Newburyport. The living art of this Play Festival does just that. Each Sunday promises to be a terrific show”.
