Artist Reception: Chinese New Year
Carry Out Cafe & Catering in Newburyport, MA, is currently featuring Chinese Brush Paintings by local resident Susan Abrams Tiano in its Cafe. Susan has been working in this medium of brush, ink and rice paper for almost three decades, creating floral and landscape paintings that are fluid and spontaneous.
The collection will be on display in the gallery through February 28. A free Artist Reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18th from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Carry Out Cafe and will feature tantalizing bites of Chinese cuisine. The public is invited to come by to meet the artist, enjoy snacks and beverages, and ring in the Chinese New Year with a feast for both your eyes and your taste buds.
Chinese Brush Painting is based on the calligraphy strokes of Chinese writing and uses a variety of brush sizes from extremely fine for details, like the boat in a landscape or butterfly with plum blossoms, to very large, like lotus leaves. About 30 years ago while teaching art to children in the Cambridge Public Schools, Susan signed up for a Chinese Brush Painting Workshop and soon became a convert to this precise form of artwork.
Along with technical skill, the brush artist infuses the "chi" - meaning spirit or life force, which brings the painting to life. As in all things, balance brings harmony. There is no rough draft, nor preliminary sketching on rice paper and no erasing the ink stroke once it is made. The stroke has to be right the first time. Susan has developed her own beautiful and serene style, inspired by flowers and landscapes.
