A World Premiere Performance Concert
For the past six years the Custom House Maritime Museum and Newburyport Chamber Music Festival have collaborated on an innovative artistic medium: honoring and exploring history through music. On November 5th, 2016, our fourth collaborative production takes place, featuring the World Premiere Performance of "The Holy Terror!" Seldom mentioned in history books, Newburyport native, Captain William Nichols, Jr., naval hero in the War of 1812, was a bold and daring privateer sea captain and son of a Revolutionary War privateer captain. In Newburyport he was known as the man without fear; though the British who faced him at sea, called him "The Holy Terror." By Presidential appointment, Captain Nichols served the United States of America as Newburyport's Collector of Customs.
Join us for a truly unique artistic and historic event, as Ensemble Epomeo (Lydia Hong, violin; David Yang, viola; and Kenneth Woods, cello) returns to Newburyport to ignite the legendary acoustics of the Custom House, performing the World Premiere of this historical musical piece two years in the making.
Through impeccable research, author G. William Freeman, Ed.D., a sixth generation descendant of Captain Nichols, has brought this amazing and true story out from the shadows of history in a recently released biography. And now this story will be performed by Ensemble Epomeo, with percussionist Mike Williams, in a work composed by Adam Silverman. The evening's program will also include selected works of Beethoven, Krása, and Yang (our own Artistic Director) for an unforgettable Custom House adventure.
