The Maiden Voyage of Meaghan O'Dell
Written by Anna Smulowitz & Charles Van Eman.
Directed by Anna Smulowitz.
Anna Smulowitz debuts her original play coauthored by Charles Van Eman at the Firehouse Center. This piece follows the success of her last new play at the Firehouse. "Millyard Mass" was performed on the 100th anniversary of the Bread and Roses strike in Laurence. Similarly, "Meaghan O'Dell " marks the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the Titanic.
In April of 1912 a group of young people take a maiden voyage on the Titanic seeking new lives and opportunities in America. A Ballet troupe who had spent the winter in Paris training with the Russian Ballet and Irish orphans intersect through social class conflicts. Deeper understanding and life long connections are made ultimately influencing life and death decisions on this ill fated voyage.
Drama students who will assist Anna in direction are Alley Gelsomini, Fedja Celebic, and Katherine Hall. Choreography is by Linda Zirin . Laila Streiff, Anna's student 33 years ago will return to design, costumes and set pieces. Slides are once again created by Rich Beatty.
