Thoretta’s career started by playing in two bands, “Lamont Zodiac and The Love Signs” and “The Chisel Brothers featuring Thornetta Davis”. “Sunday Morning Music”, her first solo effort was recorded in 1996 on the legendary Seattle-based Sub Pop label. Her playing career is impressive as she has opened for blues and soul legends Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks, Johnnie Johnson and many more. She has also performed with Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger, and Kid Rock.
In September 2016, she released the album Honest Woman, which was named Best Soul Blues Album of the Year by Blues Blast magazine, as well as earning eight Detroit Music Awards. Thornetta not only self-produced the album but put it out on her own label, Sweet Mama Music.
Thornetta has played in Newburyport during 2018's Americana Rhythm and Roots Festival.
