Join Jim Cunningham, a descendent of the first settlers of Newbury and lifelong Newbury resident, for a presentation on the mining boom in the Newbury area. Starting as early as 1697 many minerals have been discovered through the area, including Gold and Silver.
During the 1870s silver was discovered in a pasture along Scotland Road – the Chipman Mine. By 1873, land values in the area had jumped skyward. One newspaper article, published as far away as Colorado, reported the discovery of silver in Newbury, describing the crowds of people drawn into town by the promise of silver and filling the saloons and dance halls in Newburyport.
