Newburyport Public School nurses, in addition to caring for the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of the district’s 3000 students, must be attuned to students’ socio-economic situations. School nurses are often called on to intervene when hunger, appropriate clothing, transportation to school, and other unmet student needs impact student’s ability to learn.
The next Local Poverty Matters Discussion, on February 3rd, features Cathy Riccio, RN, Coordinator for Health Services for Newburyport Public Schools. She administers a grant from the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health to help deal with these problems. Hear about the poverty issues that school nurses face, the extent of the problems in our local schools, and how nurses are responding.
Local Poverty Matters Discussion Group will be held next on Wednesday, February 3, from 7-8 PM at the First Religious society Church, 28 Pleasant St., (basement classroom) in Newburyport.
Sponsored by Pennies for Poverty and the Social Action Committee of the First Religious Society, Local Poverty Matters Discussions are held from 7-8 pm on the first Wednesday of the month from October through May. They are free and open to the public.
