Celebrating our first European artwork exhibition.
Jean-Pierre Besenval joins uf from Paris for a 12-day exhibition featuring his latest collection of 15th Century Renaissance style paintings on wood-panel of the Tuscan & Umbrian landscape.
The exhibit will be on display through April 5th only, when most works will return to Paris.
Artist's Reception: Saturday, March 26th from 6-9 PM. Refreshments will be served.
Jean-Pierre was born in Paris in 1956 to a family that originated from Italy. In 1977 he studied with Georges Guillot, a master artist in painting on wood, at his studio in Rue des Francs Bourgeois, Paris. From 1978-1981 Jean-Pierre pursued his passion for the Italian Renaissance period, and refined his studies in Florence while painting in the Tuscan countryside.
His works have been displayed in the Cloister of Billettes in Paris and has worked for fashion designer John Galliano of Christian Dior. In 1984 he opened his own atelier, an art gallery in the Marais neighborhood of Paris.
Jean-Pierre divides his time between Paris and Panicale, Italy. He currently teaches the antique methods of antique painting on wood in Panicale, Italy.
"Since my first trips in Italy, I have always been deeply touched by the rare atmosphere emanating from the works of art of the Italian Renaissance discovered during my visits. I couldn’t say if the Tuscan landscapes helped me to discover the pictorial work of art, or if, on the contrary, the paintings opened my eyes on the magic of this country. But what I am sure of is that I have been greatly moved by these lands and that I often go back there to learn this language with an eye to have a better understanding of this spirit. The paintings, the frescos, the altarpieces and the polychrome sculptures impressed me so much so that I wanted to carry on an activity close to these works. Indeed, it was at that moment that I chose to turn myself towards a work marked by the spirit of Cinquecento. Then, I discovered the Flemish painting from the 15th century, in which I found some emotions of Italian painting."- Jean-Pierre Besenval
