The play is adapted by Kent Stephens from the award winning book, Charley, written by Donna Marie Seim. The play, Charley, is based on the true story of a twelve-year-old boy living in Boston in 1910. Abandoned by his down-and-out father, he winds up on the steps of an orphanage. With a voice like an angel he finds himself singing in the orphanage traveling choir. After many heart-rending disappointments he sings his way into a farming family in rural Maine. Now, Charley faces his most difficult challenge. He must change from a street- wise city boy to being a member of a dairy farming family. Will Charley be worthy of the Worthington family from Greene, Maine? Or, will the Worthington’s be worthy of Charley?
Charley, the book, has won Best in Regional Fiction from the New England Book Festival, 2014. Peter E. Randall Publisher, received a special commendation from the State of Maine Legislature for publishing Charley. Charley was awarded top honors and received, The Eloquent Quill Award for Youth Fiction, from Literary Classic Awards in 2016.
A copy of Charley resides in the official State of Maine Literary Collection. Charley has been incorporated in the curriculum for fourth grade classes in Newburyport and Amesbury, Massachusetts.
