Kristen Miller is a one-woman cello army. She plugs her antique cello into a live digital recorder to stack layers of earthy cello, spoken word and singing. The result is a rich tapestry of rhythm, harmony, and deep melodic contour that Billboard writer Bobby Borg calls hauntingly, charmingly, brilliant. Named 2004 Female Artist of the Year by Jam Magazine, Kristen was also a finalist for Best Instrumental Artist. Her first two solo-CDs charted on college and community radio across North America, with Later That Day (2003) spending a year at #2 on AOL/Netscape Radio’s New AcousticTop 25. Her second CD, Strange Little Valentine (2006) features a quirky version of Johnny Cash'sRing of Fire, which was the inspiration for Adam Lambert's rendition on American Idol. Her next CD, Walk, will be released in June, 2010.Of her work as a recording session cellist, producer Mike Null says: "Not only does she have the technique and intonation of a first chair cellist, she also has the intuition and the ear of a jazz musician. She's the kind of player you can let loose on a track. I highly recommend her."Among her influences, Kristen cites Led Zeppelin, Dead Can Dance, J.S. Bach, and the music of Africa and Native North America. Although she holds two music degrees, as well as a Graduate Certificate from the Kodaly Institute at NYU, it was time spent jamming inplaces like Washington Square Park and Soho that have left the deepest musical impact on her work. She lends her inimitable approach to a variety of projects from folk to heavy metal. Her discography includes work for Vance Gilbert and for Irma Thomas' Grammy nominated Simply Grand (Rounder, 2008.) Kristen's song Kilim was nominated for a 2009 JPF Award in the Best Instrumental Song category. She is the winner of several awards and scholarships, including the Zara Nelsova Cellist Award.Kristen's music has been used in documentaries, choreography, and multi-media projects.
