"Capturing Light: Palette Painting with Janis Sanders"
Medium: Any painting medium (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc)
Materials List: To be provided. You will need to have clean up materials as well as a paint surface of your choice.
Level: Open to all, from beginner to advanced.
Class Dates: June 13th &14th, 10-2PM. Lunch will be provided from 12-1. Lunch will be provided from Middle Street Foods.
Cost of Two Day Workshop: $275.00
Janis Sanders, a renowned artist known for his innovative techniques in capturing light, will conduct a Spring workshop at Threadneedle Gallery. This immersive experience, is aimed at both beginners and seasoned artists, and focuses on the principles of light and color in painting. The two day workshop will be held at Threadneedle Gallery in downtown Newburyport in a private room. We’ll bring in lunch from Middle Street Foods.
The workshop will be held over two days from 10-2 allowing ample time for both instruction and hands-on practice. Participants are asked to bring a few photos of a landscape subject they would like to paint. They’ll consult with Janis and chose a piece that helps them learn about color, light and compostion using a palette knife.
First Day: You’ll meet at Threadneedle. You will pick a subject to paint. At noon, you’ll break for lunch from Middle Street Foods. Later, will have various break out sessions to learn more about painting and capturing light. We'll wrap uo the day at 2PM.
Second Day: You’ll come to the gallery for a painting session You’ll paint and learn new techniques. Break for lunch from Middle Street Foods. Then wrap up your day with a collaborative exchange of ideas between participants and Janis.
Some of the break out sessions:
1. Understanding Light
Janis focuses on light in his paintings Participants will learn how light affects color perception and the emotional impact of different lighting conditions.
Hands-On Activity:
Artists will experiment with various light sources and their effects on colors by creating quick studies in natural light.
2. Color Mixing Techniques
The workshop will include a brief lecture on color theory and mixing colors. Janis will demonstrate how to create a "light palette" using complementary colors to enhance brightness and vibrancy in artwork.
Interactive Exercise:
Participants will create color swatches, blending hues to understand how to achieve desired tones and highlights.
3. Composition and Perspective
Janis will provide insights into effective composition strategies. Attendees will explore how to lead a viewer’s eye through their artwork using light and shadow.
Group Activity:
In small groups, participants will provide feedback based on light effects, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Final Projects
By the final day, each participant will have completed or be working on a personal project applying the techniques learned during the workshop. Janis will offer individualized guidance during the program, helping artists refine their pieces to best capture light and emotion.
