"A Christmas Carol Panto" presented by Theater in the Open and Firehouse Center for the Arts
When Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" he created a new holiday tradition, but did you know he was a huge fan and proponent of the biggest Christmas tradition of his own time, PANTO? This December, Charles Dickens will join us at the Firehouse to see just what has become of his beloved panto, and how a century and a half of "A Christmas Carol" has affected our holiday traditions. He can expect snowball fights, pies-in-the-face, cross-dressing, bad puns, and all the silliness he remembers from his youth, as well as the holiday cheer and togetherness that only Scrooge and Tiny Tim can inspire!
Wondering what, exactly, a Panto is? Pantomime, or panto, is a long-standing musical-comedy theatrical tradition, performed throughout the United Kingdom, often during the holiday season. Panto is playful, inventive family entertainment that begins with a familiar story or fairy tale, then takes off from there. Part of the fun with panto is the audience participation — it takes only a few minutes to realize that the actors are having as much fun as the audience! With panto, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy, young and old, alike.
