SUMMARY:Special Presentation – Saving the Wood Island Life Saving Station
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to attend a free special presentation by Sam Reid\, President of the Wood Island Life Saving Station Assoc. on Sunday\, October 22\, 2023\, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Moseley Gallery at the Custom House Maritime Museum.\n\n \n\nThe Wood Island Life Saving Staton (WILSS) is an iconic landmark off the coast of Maine that was once used as a base for men who saved the lives of mariners in distress. Built in 1907\, the WILSS housed brave surfmen who were part of the US Life Saving Service (a forerunner of the US Coast Guard) who would wait with small rowing boats to go out to help mariners in distress in terrible conditions year-round.\n\n \n\nHaving stood watch at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Kittery Point\, ME\, for 114 years\, this historic gem was left to slowly crumble for 60 years\, at risk of losing its purpose and history forever. Hear from Mr. Reid about the journey of tenacity and determination to save the WILSS by undertaking a historically accurate interior and exterior restoration.\n\n \n\nSeating is limited\, so please RSVP at dtorres@thechmm.org to reserve your seat. Please note: the Museum is not ADA accessible.\n\n \n\nABOUT CUSTOM HOUSE MARITIME MUSEUM\n\nThe Custom House Maritime Museum was established to protect\, preserve\, interpret\, and celebrate the lower Merrimack River Valley's maritime heritage and how it relates to American history. Today\, the Museum is a dynamic maritime history museum\, education and cultural center\, research facility\, and a meeting place for people seeking a unique venue for professional or social gatherings. We connect our vibrant past with the present through our relationships with local education\, artistic\, business\, and environmental organizations. Housed in a historic landmark\, the Museum's unique collection of maritime objects\, art\, models\, and historical documents reflects the region's rich history from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century. For more information\, visit the museum at www.thechmm.org\, call 978-462-8681\, or email info@thechmm.org.
