DESCRIPTION:MISSION MOSAIC\n\nCelebrating 225 Years of Service to America\n\nToday's Coast Guard began in 1790 as an armed customs enforcement service called the Revenue Marine.  Its name officially changed to the Revenue Cutter Service in 1894\, and in 1915 Congress merged it with the Life Saving Service to form the United States Coast Guard. In 1939\, the Lighthouse Service was added.\n\nWith the help of the Coast Guard Art Program\, on the occasion of this 225th Anniversary of America's longest continuously operating maritime service\, we present an exhibition of artwork in tribute to the heritage of missions the United States Coast Guard performs -- and to those who accomplish these missions in service to America.\n\nWe invite you to explore and discover through artistic depiction the many and evolving roles fulfilled by the United States Coast Guard over two and a quarter centuries of service to the nation.
