Welch request your presence at the naming of the Newburyport High School Fitness Center \n\nin his honor. \n\n\n\nFriday\, August 1\, 2014\n\nat the NHS Gymnasium at 2 p.m. \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Bob Welch (right) pictured with Carl Beal NHS Class of '53 who led the naming opportunity to honor Bob\n \n \n\nThere will be refreshments available after the dedication and an opportunity to greet and chat with Bob.\n\n Robert "Bob" Welch's \n\n career as a physical education teacher and coach spanned for more than three decades and transformed physical education in Newburyport.\n\n\n\n \n\n During his tenure\, Bob Welch pioneered new programs while introducing activities like ropes courses\, climbing walls and even cross-country skiing and winter camping. He took students out on mountain hikes and other nature activities\, and emphasized "lifetime sports" such as tennis\, golf\, archery and other leisure activities that students could use to stay in shape as they got older. Welch also served as citywide director of intramural sports\, organized a Boys Leaders club\, built one of the first outdoor hockey rinks in Newburyport\, established the first tennis program at Newburyport High School and also served as coach of the tennis\, football\, baseball basketball teams\, earning Coach of the Year recognition twice.
