Mill River Winery Releases 2016 Vintage Malbec

March 02, 2017

ROWLEY -- Winemakers and owners Donna Martin and Rick Rousseau are pleased to announce that Mill River Winery has launched its 2016 vintage Malbec, produced with grapes sourced from the Curico Valley wine region of Chile.

The wine was released to the 600-member Mill River Wine Club last week and will be available to the public at a free wine release event in the winery's tasting room on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5 from 1-5 p.m.

To celebrate the country and culture of Chile, the tasting event will feature music and food samples that pair well with Malbec. Samples of the Mill River Malbec will be available to patrons 21 years and older.
"As a local winery, our mission is to produce the highest quality handcrafted wines using the finest grapes from both Massachusetts and notable wine regions around the world, like the Curico Valley," Martin said. "I am proud that Mill River continues to grow by launching new products and through expanding our wine club. This is all thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff and we hope everyone will come out this weekend to try our new release."

The Curico Valley, located 115 miles south of the capital city of Santiago, Chile, has a diverse soil combination of clay and decomposed granite derived from limestone and volcanic rock from the Andes mountains. Grapes harvested in this area have a dark purple color and tend to be more tannic and complex than in other regions.

Malbec has been referred to as a "rustic Merlot" because of its earthy, woody character. Mill River Malbec has aromas and flavors of currant, blackberry and plums, surrounded by a savory bitterness and dark chocolate. The finish lingers on the palate and is a balanced combination of earth, oak and spice.

Recommended food pairings include lean meats, dark meat poultry, spicy cumin dishes and pasta with light tomato and cream sauces. Malbec also pairs well with red meats, pork and stews. Mill River's staff favorites include marinated flank steak, burgers with blue cheese, grilled lollipop lamb chops, pulled pork, chili, fajitas and chimichurri sauce.

For this weekend only, Mill River Malbec will be offered at a special price to the general public at $5 off two or more bottles and $10 off six or more bottles. Club members will also receive their additional wine club discount. Tasting flights of other Mill River wines and cheese and charcuterie plates will also be available for purchase.
