Newburyport Art (NAA) presents the 2026 OpArt Exhibit, on view from April 1st through April 25th. This exhibit features over 90 art pieces by artists from Opportunity Works, as well as a series of portraits of the OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

The OpArt program founded in 2004 is a partnership between the Newburyport Art Association and Opportunity Works with a mission to encourage and support individuals with disabilities to fulfill their life ambitions through the creative process. OpArt is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to enrich their lives through visionary expression and artistic practice by providing instruction in a variety of mediums and techniques. Artists are encouraged to work freely and experiment across different media (paint pastels, collage, drawing, sculpture, etc.) to produce artwork centered on a theme or their imagination. 

On view alongside this exhibit are 36 portraits of OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

John became an OpArt volunteer after meeting several artists during the 2025 OpArt Show at Newburyport Art. John writes that “At first I thought I’d paint just a few portraits, for practice. At a class, I showed one student his portrait, and the idea of including it in this show came up. The student was so excited about that possibility-I knew then I needed to paint them all." In the end, John painted 36 portraits (and one opossum) over a five-month period-getting more practice than he intended. The OpArt team of volunteers hopes visitors enjoy the artwork and John’s portraits, and recognize as we do, the joy these gifted artists bring to our community.

An Artist Reception & Celebration will be held on Thursday, April 9th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public, with light refreshments being served.

This group is part of a community of artists that share their love for watercolor and seek to provide opportunities to learn, paint and exhibit together. The group meets monthly to share, critique, and support members’ creative work. Members range from professional artists to novice painters. Members often volunteer to facilitate meetings and share things they have learned through workshops or individual exploration. Often there is a painting theme or challenge of the month. Newburyport's Offin Boardman carried secret letters for John Adams, who argued court cases in Newburyport. The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock, Adams, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders, across class lines and from all backgrounds, had not joined the fight. John Hancock, John Adams, Abigail Adams, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases, acts of civil disobedience, espionage, community outreach), they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves, their neighbors, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the shared fight became a covenant, and the rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, the promise of independence. On the 250th anniversary of our nation, we celebrate that covenant, that promise, and the men and women who made it all possible.

Nina Sankovitch is an avid historian and voracious reader. She has written five books of non-fiction, including American Rebels: How the Hancock, Adams, And Quincy Fanned the Flames of Revolution, and most recently, Not Your Founding Father; How a Nonbinary Minster Became America’s Most Radical Revolutionary. Sankovitch attended Tufts University and Harvard Law School and now lives in New York City.

Nurses, first responders, clinicians & educators, join us for this Wellness Delivered training (part of an ongoing series). This free training, held at Link House's Amesbury home office, is open to anyone with an interest in learning more about substance use disorder.

This training series on emerging trends in substance use disorder and behavioral health is generously funded by Anna Jaques Hospital Beth Israel Lahey Health through the Community Benefits grant.

Newburyport Art (NAA) presents the 2026 OpArt Exhibit, on view from April 1st through April 25th. This exhibit features over 90 art pieces by artists from Opportunity Works, as well as a series of portraits of the OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

The OpArt program founded in 2004 is a partnership between the Newburyport Art Association and Opportunity Works with a mission to encourage and support individuals with disabilities to fulfill their life ambitions through the creative process. OpArt is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to enrich their lives through visionary expression and artistic practice by providing instruction in a variety of mediums and techniques. Artists are encouraged to work freely and experiment across different media (paint pastels, collage, drawing, sculpture, etc.) to produce artwork centered on a theme or their imagination. 

On view alongside this exhibit are 36 portraits of OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

John became an OpArt volunteer after meeting several artists during the 2025 OpArt Show at Newburyport Art. John writes that “At first I thought I’d paint just a few portraits, for practice. At a class, I showed one student his portrait, and the idea of including it in this show came up. The student was so excited about that possibility-I knew then I needed to paint them all." In the end, John painted 36 portraits (and one opossum) over a five-month period-getting more practice than he intended. The OpArt team of volunteers hopes visitors enjoy the artwork and John’s portraits, and recognize as we do, the joy these gifted artists bring to our community.

An Artist Reception & Celebration will be held on Thursday, April 9th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public, with light refreshments being served.

Newburyport Art (NAA) presents the 2026 OpArt Exhibit, on view from April 1st through April 25th. This exhibit features over 90 art pieces by artists from Opportunity Works, as well as a series of portraits of the OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

The OpArt program founded in 2004 is a partnership between the Newburyport Art Association and Opportunity Works with a mission to encourage and support individuals with disabilities to fulfill their life ambitions through the creative process. OpArt is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to enrich their lives through visionary expression and artistic practice by providing instruction in a variety of mediums and techniques. Artists are encouraged to work freely and experiment across different media (paint pastels, collage, drawing, sculpture, etc.) to produce artwork centered on a theme or their imagination. 

On view alongside this exhibit are 36 portraits of OpArt artists created by John Douglass.

John became an OpArt volunteer after meeting several artists during the 2025 OpArt Show at Newburyport Art. John writes that “At first I thought I’d paint just a few portraits, for practice. At a class, I showed one student his portrait, and the idea of including it in this show came up. The student was so excited about that possibility-I knew then I needed to paint them all." In the end, John painted 36 portraits (and one opossum) over a five-month period-getting more practice than he intended. The OpArt team of volunteers hopes visitors enjoy the artwork and John’s portraits, and recognize as we do, the joy these gifted artists bring to our community.

An Artist Reception & Celebration will be held on Thursday, April 9th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public, with light refreshments being served.

This group is part of a community of artists that share their love for watercolor and seek to provide opportunities to learn, paint and exhibit together. The group meets monthly to share, critique, and support members’ creative work. Members range from professional artists to novice painters. Members often volunteer to facilitate meetings and share things they have learned through workshops or individual exploration. Often there is a painting theme or challenge of the month. The 21st annual Newburyport Literary Festival, a celebration of reading and the love of books featuring award-winning authors and engaging panel discussions, will take place April 24–26, 2026, in various locations in downtown Newburyport and online. There is no charge to attend. This year’s theme is Revolutionary Legacies. The opening ceremony is on Friday, April 24, at 6:00 p.m., at the Firehouse Center for the Arts. North Shore artist and designer Michael Updike, son of literary legend John Updike, will discuss Selected Letters of John Updike by James Schiff with The New York Times Book Review critic Alexandra Jacobs, a life-long Updike fan. Event sponsorships are still available.

On Saturday, April 25, festival events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Breakfast with the Poets and continue throughout the day. A wide range of distinguished biographers, poets, novelists, and historians will read from and discuss their work. Authors and poets include Catherine Newman, Annie Hartnett, Andre Dubus III, Marianne Leone, Gish Jen, Alan Lightman, Christine Pride, and Jenna Blum. Planned panels will focus on romance novels, humor, and immigration, and Caleb Gayle (Black Moses) will speak as part of a session sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. A Melopoeia for Charles Coe will be performed by the original Diminished Prophets, and Newburyport High School’s Poetry Soup students will read original works.

Saturday evening’s event, Women’s Voices of Rebellion and Revolution, features readings of women’s writing at 7:00 p.m. at the Firehouse Center for the Arts. As the U.S. reflects on 250 years as a nation, this event celebrates voices that were largely uncelebrated at the time.

Virtual programming on Sunday, April 26, runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will include a writing workshop with Sara Reish Desmond, a conversation with local tennis journalist Christopher Clarey (The Master; The Warrior), and panels on writing for both YA and adult audiences and the environmental mystery of Costa Rica’s golden toads, among others. Registration is required for Zoom events. Also on Sunday, at 9:00 a.m. Ghlee Woodward will lead a historical walk of downtown Newburyport meeting at the Essex Street Inn.

Learning to Paint Cows with Susan Williamson

Medium: Any painting medium

Materials List: To be provided. 

Level: Basic knowledge of painting.This workshop is suitable for painters with a range of experience and emphasis will be placed on learning how to see form, simplify anatomy, and build a portrait that feels alive. Helpful in learning how to paint family pets as well.

Class Dates: April 25th & 26th, Rain date May 3rd (if it rains on the 25th). 

Join New England artist, Susan Williamson for a workshop painting cows.  In the morning, you’ll Go to a Farm with Susan and learn how she observes . Then you’ll return to the gallery where you’ll  begin to think about what you will paint. (list)/  Susan is a professional artist who has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy.  She’s  known for her cows and an occasion landscape. She understands her friendly cows and gets to know them well. She’ll teach you how to expand your brushwork, and how to paint emotion and movement. This is a collaborative workshop to help you develop new skills and will be collaborative 

DAY ONE 9a-1p (Location TBD) 

We’ll visit a farm and experience cows up close, pay attention to how they move, and notice their different personalities.  We’ll take reference shots and review composition, form and color back at Threadneedle Gallery. Those memories will surface while you’re looking at your images and while painting the chosen bovine. Susan will help you decide which image to choose based on composition, lighting, and your preference for color. During the day, we’ll break for lunch from Middle Street foods. 

DAY TWO 9a- 1p (Threadneedle Gallery)

We’ll meet at the gallery, where we’ll discuss a process beginning with value studies done with gray scale markers or pencils. Students will clearly see large shapes instead of details while looking at images under tracing paper ( which will be supplied) then tracing those shapes which will be differentiated by value. The traced images will then be transferred to the painting surface (  Saral transfer paper also supplied). Once the drawing has been transferred to the painting surface, mix color based on values of the large shapes and move towards establishing form with changes within the large mass. 

Susan will come around to each person and help answer questions or assist getting past challenging areas. 

END OF DAY 2 

The class will look at paintings created by everyone and discuss what we’ll continue practicing on our own. No judgement even though we tend to harshly judge our own work so let’s be open and kind to ourselves.

 This workshop is not about finishing a masterpiece. It’s about learning how to see and build a bovine portrait with clarity and respect. That’s our universal journey as painters no matter the subject.

ABOUT MICHAEL DUTRA

For more than 20 years, Michael Dutra has been performing his tribute to Frank Sinatra all over the United States—from Las Vegas to Miami and across New England, in supper clubs, iconic theaters, and performing arts centers including the infamous BB Kings and Blue Note in New York. Michael was recently hailed by the Boston Globe as one of the finest interpreters of the Sinatra sound in the world–“his sound is velour to Sinatra’s velvet, you really can’t tell the difference.”

In this in-person workshop, learn the fundamentals of the four main types of intellectual property (IP): trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets. About the Band

With countless tunes you know from the first note, rip-roaring gigs you can count on, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things,” You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” and “Closer To Free,” just to name a few. However, they still reflect the soul and spirit of the modern American experience on their fourteenth full-length offering, 4 The Last Time.

“The music of BoDeans has defined much of my life,” muses Kurt. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy. I wanted to creatively do something positive for the world instead of just taking from it. So, this is what I’ve chosen to do with my life. The music was always about the blue-collar dream of a better life, and it still is.”

BoDeans emerged out of Waukesha, WI in 1986 with the seminal debut, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, produced by T Bone Burnett. Following Outside Looking In [1987], Home [1989], and Black and White [1991], Go Slow Down [1993] yielded “Closer To Free,” which famously served as the theme song for the smash hit television series Party of Five. With a sought-after discography, their music landed hundreds of television and film placements. Meanwhile, they transformed into a proven live phenomenon by supporting the likes of U2, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, The Pretenders, and David Bowie in addition to gracing the bills of Farm Aid, Summerfest, and ACL. Speaking to the group’s legacy, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame permanently entrenched BoDeans in the Midwest Artists exhibit. Most recently, 2017’s Thirteen arrived to widespread acclaim from The Chicago Tribune and Glide Magazine who spotlighted the music’s “understated grace—an attribute that no doubt fuels the steadfast approach Kurt Neumann has employed of his thirty-plus years as a ‘BoDean’.” Along the way, NETFLIX’s The Ranch also utilized over 70 tunes from Kurt, and he launched his own podcast Staring At The World.
