The Cars were an American rock band formed in Boston in 1976. Emerging from the new wave scene in the late 1970s, the line-up consisted of singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter Ric Ocasek; bassist and singer Benjamin Orr; lead guitarist Elliot Easton; keyboardist Greg Hawkes; and drummer David Robinson.

In 2018 The CARS were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Their music has inspired countless musicians and will live on for generations to come.

In September, the Museum of Old Newbury hosted Askew Pictures, a dynamic international documentary film team led by Leslie Askew, producer and director of projects for SBS, National Geographic, Al Jazeera, CBS, BET, PBS, History Channel, and CNN (including the award-winning CNN Heroes). During that visit, Askew interviewed Newburyport resident Kabria Baumgartner, who appears throughout the film.

After the film’s premiere to a packed house at the Museum of African American History in Boston, we were thrilled when Askew Pictures offered to bring the film to Newburyport for a screening in our museum. We’re proud to feature this program as part of MA250 programming, as the film highlights Phillis Wheatley’s belief in the Revolutionary cause and the era’s urgent, unfinished promises of liberty.

The Beautiful Losers was put together by Last Laugh vocalist, Devin Cordeiro. “I have always wanted to put together the most authentic Seger show but never had the time. Well, I made time for it and as I planned for it all, top on the list was joining together the best musicians that the New England music scene had to offer. I started at the top of the list talent wise and just went for it. The truth is I couldn’t have assembled a more talented, dedicated, and professional group for this project and as a result, it has exceeded all expectations. The All-Star lineup are Carl Ayotte, David Ayotte, Stephen Baker, Nate Comp, Kevin Elder, Bill Plourde, and David Stefanelli. Vocally, musically, sonically, and dynamically this band is as good as it gets. With an endless crop of hits to pick from we will no doubt be the BEST Bob Seger tribute band in the land!”

About Juston McKinney

With multiple appearances on The Tonight Show, two Comedy Central specials, and two Amazon Prime specials, including his latest, Parentally Challenged, it’s no wonder the New York Times called Juston McKinney, “Destined for stardom.”

In the late 1990’s, after a career as a Deputy Sherriff in Maine, he traded in his badge for a microphone and went from York County to New York City to pursue a career in comedy. He quickly became a regular at Comic Strip Live, Stand-Up New York, Dangerfield’s, Gotham Comedy Club, Caroline’s on Broadway and the New York Times called him, “Destined for stardom.” Juston would go on to sign sitcom development deals with Warner Brothers, CBS, IFC and Comedy Central.

He has appeared on numerous Comedy Central shows including his half-hour Comedy Central Presents special and his own one-hour special.  He has appeared several times on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien as well as a Showtime Comedy Special with Rob Gronkowski. He has appeared twice at Denis Leary’s, Comics Come Home at the TD Garden. His TV & movie credits include The King of Queens,100 Centre Street, The Zoo Keeper and Here Comes the Boom. He recently wrote and starred in the short film, Suck It Up, which screened at the NH Film Festival. He was awarded “Best Acting Performance.”

Newburyport's Offin Boardman carried secret letters for John Adams, who argued court cases in Newburyport. The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock, Adams, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders, across class lines and from all backgrounds, had not joined the fight. John Hancock, John Adams, Abigail Adams, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases, acts of civil disobedience, espionage, community outreach), they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves, their neighbors, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the shared fight became a covenant, and the rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, the promise of independence. On the 250th anniversary of our nation, we celebrate that covenant, that promise, and the men and women who made it all possible.

Nina Sankovitch is an avid historian and voracious reader. She has written five books of non-fiction, including American Rebels: How the Hancock, Adams, And Quincy Fanned the Flames of Revolution, and most recently, Not Your Founding Father; How a Nonbinary Minster Became America’s Most Radical Revolutionary. Sankovitch attended Tufts University and Harvard Law School and now lives in New York City.
