The Shipwrecks of Stellwagen Bank

Date: February 18, 2012 Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The Wreck of the Steamship Portland
Event Description Join NOAA maritime archaeologists, Deborah Marx and Matthew Lawrence for a tour of the Stellwagen Bank National Maritime Sanctuary's historic shipwrecks. Deborah and Matthew will present the 45-minute Science Channel's Viewers Choice Award winning documentary, "The Wreck of the Steamship Portland." On Nov. 26, 1898, the Steamship Portland left India Wharf in Boston for Portland, Maine, on a regularly scheduled run. She never made it to port. After much speculation, in 2002 researchers conclusively solved the mystery surrounding the Portland's location. The movie will be followed by a presentation on Sanctuary maritime heritage projects and a tour of the Sanctuary's exhibit at Maritime Gloucester. In 2011, this event received a 2011 Trails & Sails "People's Choice Award" for being a top ten, fan favorite!
